Rank Advancement
Every rank in scouting is reached by accomplishments by the scout. These requirements are age-appropriate activities that help grow and mold the boy into a self-sufficient, confident, able adult. Themes run through the requirements from the beginning Scout to the Eagle.
Requirements will be completed in a couple different ways on the scouting journey. Some will be completed at meetings and other on campouts, summer camp or other scouting events. Each scout should work with the Adult and Scout leaders in order to complete requirements. The most up to date requirements can be found in the Scout Handbook, Scoutbook or BSA Scout Requirements guide pdf.
Often rank requirements will be filled with Merit Badges. Sometimes the troop will offer classes during regular meeting or on a special merit badge night. If scouts need a specific badge they can reach out to a councilor to teach a class. All Merit Badge Councilors are Youth Protection trained and will and adhere to all youth protection rules. Work with the troop Scoutmaster to get a current list of Merit Badge Councilors in the area.
Before each advancement is awarded the scout will meet with the Scoutmaster to discuss their progress and then will complete a board of review with members from the troop committee. The Eagle Board of Review is held with members of the council, please see the Life to Eagle guide for more information.
Each scout and parent can track progress using Scoutbook. The BSA Advancement Website below has resources to help parents, scouts, leaders and understand the requirements.
Advancement will be recognized quarterly at a Court of Honor along with any merit badges earned.
